This is the “wee-snarl” described by Pieplow, who writes that it is “given in a variety of situations including courtship and alarm.” Given that it went on for ten minutes or longer while the two birds interacted, I’m betting on courtship in this case. Also audible: House Finch
Observation details
Extensive vocalizing as the two birds hung out near each other in the row of large eucalyptus trees north of the railroad tracks (“Artist’s Passage”).
