Observation details
Originally found by Bernie Foy on Apr. 11, 2015 and it continued for Roger Clark later that same day. Wendell Egelhoff was able to see the bird on Apr. 12, 2015. This bird was clearly in heavy molt. Overall the body was much paler than one would expect for an Eared Grebe, and the back was a paler sooty color than typically seen in Eared Grebes. The flanks were pale whitish with a redish cast beginning to become quite apparent. The breast was white. The bill was thicker and straighter than one would expect for an Eared Grebe (which tend to have thinner and slightly upturned bills), and the bill appeared dark. The eye was red and the face was black. Golden "horns" on either side of the face were already essentially molted in and contrasted sharply with the dark face, crown, hindhead, and forehead. It is also worth noting that these "horns" protruded above the head (unlike an Eared Grebe which has golden "ear" on either side of the face that do not protrude above the head). The legs and feet were a dull grayish color. The neck was beginning to take on a reddish color, as were the nape and throat. The center of the throat however still appeared slightly dusky.
