The facial pattern seen in these photos might be indicative of a hybrid; however, All About Birds (Cornell U) says, "The southern form, found in California, often shows the black and white face striping of the other sapsucker species, but all the facial feathers are tipped in red." The black splotching seen in some of the photos submitted by me and by Shanna Campbell of the same bird seem to an artifact of the lighting. Better lit photos do not show this splotching.
