Observation details
Perched in forest canopy. Was able to observe from a short distance for over five minutes. Rather compact buteo with pure white underparts. White reached from just underneath bill down to breast, belly, and undertail coverts. Bill bluish with yellow ceres; eyes extremely dark, reminiscent of a falcon. Head, back, and wings uniformly dark brown (no gray head as in WTHA). Wingtips appeared to be roughly as long as tail. No belly band or markings of any kind on the white breast and belly. It flew away from me through vegetation, so I only got the briefest glimpse in flight, but tail was light with some fine barring. Audio and very poor-quality phone photos attached. Midway up Joe Johnston trail.
