Observation details
Continuing at this location. Two pairs (2 drakes and 2 hen). Carefully scoped and double checked to ensure I wasn’t counting the same birds. Both pairs remained on separate portions of the lake. The females exhibited an entirely yellow bill but most importantly differed in structure from the nearby fem. Common Goldeneye. The Barrow’s hen showing a shorter-billed appearance with a more bulbous head and steep forehead. Not as sloping as Common Goldeneye. The males were distinctive showing the classic white crescent-shaped spot on face, more black on upperparts with a dark spur jutting in towards the breast. I attempted to locate the previously reported hybrid/s but unfortunately failed to do so. Photos.
