Observation details
We encountered this shrike as we drove thru the small town of Kubura located at the west end of the island. After some photographs from the car, the shrike flew off and we were not able to relocate it. These photos show an obvious pale gray crown suggestive of the southern race lucionensis, which is a winter visitor to the Ryukyu Islands (OSJ 2012). However, these photos also show some (warm) brown mixed with gray from the center to rear part of the crown. Perhaps this would be acceptable on a 1st year male lucionensis, but I don’t think this bird can be aged from these photos. As such, it would be best to leave it as a Brown Shrike and not identify it to a subspecific level.
