Observation details
This species is clearly doing well in the Santa Ana Mountains this year. I didn't have any in the lower canyon like I did on April 1 - this time they were frequenting the Bigcone Spring area up to the point where I turned around. The first was a male right at the beginning of Bigcone Spring. I noticed it when I heard its flight display, and was able to get close looks and a couple good photos. The remaining two, comprised of a male and a female, were right before the grove at these coordinates: (33.738897, -117.548377). This location is two groves up from Bigcone Spring. The male here was doing the flight display as well, and frequently enough for me to get an audio recording. This specific spot has lots of flowering plants that a few hummingbird species were frequenting. There is a bright pink flower that they really like, which only shows up in a few places between Bigcone Spring and this grove.
