Note the broad white wedge in outermost tail feather in this photo...
Observation details
Ashy-black mantle with heavy white spotting, bold white wingbars, and broad white wedge (not squared-off block) in outermost tail feathers, with gradually reduced white patches in subsequent inner tail feathers. Contrast between orange flanks and yellow undertail coverts. Appears to be the Great Plains 'arcticus' by these features. The orange spurs on each side of the breast are odd, but looking at other eBird documentation for 'arcticus' it seems like messy, jagged flanks are typical of this subspecies. Behavior unlike my usual (shy) towhee pair; spending long periods of time completely in the open under the feeders.
