In the bird cage in Dilli Bazar
Observation details
On the afternoon of 30 September 2016 at 17:00h, after heavy rains, a Slaty-legged Crake (very rare in Nepal, never before seen in the Kathmandu Valley) walked in Bikesh Shrestha’s shop in Dilli Bazar in the heart of Kathmandu. On the morning of 3 October 2016, Arjun Singh and Arend van Riessen released it not far from Chobar Gorge, where it had enough woods and shrubs near water to find food, to recover, and to continue on its journey to its winter holiday resort, wherever that is (Assam, Sri Lanka?). It seemed very healthy after eating insects, worms, little pieces of meat and seeds under the care of Bikesh Shrestha and Arjun and, once the cage was opened, it rushed off in to the bushes (see second photo). It was not included in the Bagmati-Taudaha bird lists because it was brought there from outside. But it was seen there! How did a very rare Terai bird end up in Kathmandu? Did it follow the Trisuli valley on its migratory way to the east? Did it lose the way during Friday’s heavy rains? Migratory mysteries.
