LNS #147649 NPR/NGS RADIO EXPEDITIONS LOG DAT 8 -Steve Seley -second DAT reporter: Chris Joyce 7-25-98 00 :16 saw mill ambi -the mill .. . cutting the wood into planks -good ambi through :47 -some more afterwards -but not as strong 1 :20 SS -(with loud mill in bg) that is basically the cap for what we are bringing in but it is just not salable in that form and one option is to chip it and to produce chips that are relatively low value the other is to take it back to the saw -the re-saw -or cutting it to inch and a half thickness. -we are grading 7 different grades ¬ 1:43 CJ -7 diff kinds of 2 x 4,2 x 6's, studs SS -right, this is inch and a half in thickness. It will go to a multitude of diff users. As I say it will have 7 diff grades and it has pulled the grade, and each of those packages of the specific grade will go to a specific customer .... 2:23 but we have taken a product that is not salable, put it into a form where it is salable -expanded our market -and that's how we are surviving. 2:35 2:36 ambi tail -loud saw mill-through 3:05 3: 10 -outside the saw mill 3: 18 SS -still has the waney (?) edge on it on one side that product will be dried, dressed, and then it will go through a chop line (loud saw up in bg) and they will chop the knots out and will finger joint back. This three (?) shop they are looking for door components. Shop grading rules are percentages of cuttings. The cuttings being diff lengths ... styles, mutts (?), terms that prob only if you were in the saw mill biz would have any meaning to you 3:57 CJ -... how many diff grades there are? 4:04 SS -in the mill here we have 108 diff grades CJ -and you can recognize each one of those 108? SS -supposed to be able to ... you are allowed 5 % error -still keep your job .. .4:28 grading lumber is like deciding whether you should cut the Tongass or not. you know -there are always those few pieces you can argue on forever whether it is a 2 shop or a 3 shop or do we cut the trees or don't we cut the trees, but grading is a judgment call and there is 5% error factor plugged in for that. 4:57 4: 58 ambi of area -VG -lots of clanking of wood -a truck in bg and the chains of machine rolling -some talking in bg -but indecipherable. Through 5:47 VG 6: 11 ambi -sound of chain that is dragging boards along -@ 7: 22 truck comes by, @ 7: 41 very loud truck ... . ambi through 7:51 VG 8:27 ambi -cleaning up -hosing down the saw mills -VG -some whistling in bg @ 9:28 some talking ambi through 9: 3 5 9:45 ambi -truck coming in towards us -some talking in bg (I think CJ and SS talking) through 10:47 ambi getting into truck 11:0 -door slam -talking in car -NG 12:26 ambi -at dock -getting into boat -some clanking as we jump on an alum. dock NG¬ 13:48 plane flies over head 14:04 motor boat passes by G 14:25 -our boat comes to dock to pick us up boat -boat motor ambi @ 15 :13 motor picks up through 15:41 better again at 15:48 -loud waves hitting side of boat and motor behind us -16:33 motor picks up and waves are harsher -good but very loud -@ 18:19 slows down @ 18:29 stops and we drift in to dock 18:58 CJ -want a bow line? The type of boat = a BOSTON WHALER the swell hitting side of boat is a SANE BOAT 19:45 helicopter above passing over us -gets louder -dog barking as Marcia walks by ... 21: 11 loud plane over he...
