Observation details

Adult retaining nonbreeding plumage. Small gull (comparable size to surrounding Ring-billed Gulls) w/ noticeably darker mantle, wide tertial crescents at back of mantle, small rounded head and very small bill w/ no visible black ring, lots of smudging on back of neck and head (all adult Ring-billed Gulls present were in breeding plumage w/ white heads), noticeably dark eye (even at a distance), yellowish legs. In flight, large white spot at the end of the black primaries was visible. Darker mantle shade (quite noticeable even with binoculars at a distance) suggests American subspecies.
