Barrow's aggressive behavior
Observation details
Male Barrow's was the most aggressive to other ducks today in all the hours I have observed him, particularly targeting a first winter Common Goldeneye male. No matter where the young male went around the docks, the chase was on. I also watched the Barrow's swim low to the water toward the Redheads present, then dive, and come up under them, causing them to move to the far side of the open water. This aggressive behavior was repeated over and over again. I also watched the Barrow's bring up a chunk of mussels and attempt to break them apart by "smacking" them on the surface of the water. Previously, I never saw him bring much to the surface, suspecting he ate mostly underwater. A blurry photo is attached, showing one example of his aggression. Unfortunately, a dock rail interfered with the focus.
