Observation details
A single bird, plus two separate groups. The single bird was odd, in the sense that it allowed very close approach. In the field, we thought it was either sick, or very tired from a recent long-distance migration. Plumage-wise, it seemed odd also, and a more detailed study at home suggested Great Knot as a possibility. The base of the lower mandible appears to show a paler area that, according to a review of photos in ML, is more often seen in Great Knot than in Red Knot. The legs seemed long and the bill seemed long also, but tell-tale scattered reddish feathers on one side of the belly discard Great Knot and lead us back to Red Knot.
