Observation details
Observed for 40 minutes at close range. Took lots of pics inlcuding one of partially webbed feet! Appears to be winter adult. Medium sized blunt black bill, black legs. light buffy indistinct band across breast, length of folded wings and tail the same, no streaks or spots on white flanks and belly, darkish ear coverts, white supercilium, and a bit darker cap. I believe this is a non-breeding adult due to the overall coloration (grayish) and lack of bold patterns on upperparts, also the supercilum, ear patch, and crown not as dark or contrasting as in juvenile. Finally, heard calling several times, a throaty "churk, churk, churk."
