Observation details
Several seen throughout. Immatures of the two species of night-herons can be difficult to separate. Structure can provide some clues. Yellow-crowned is more slender and “narrow-waisted” with longer legs. The toes barely extend past the tail tip in Black-crowned where there is some leg (foot) between the toes and tail tip in Yellow-crowned.
