Observation details
While watching my feeders, I was surprised by a hawk diving in out of no where and catching something under my feeders. The bird ruffled up and took off to a branch directly above the feeders. That's when I was able to see that it was a juvenile Red-shouldered Hawk. Red-shoulders breed on my property, but are normally only here in breeding season. The hawk perched with its prey, a mole, picking off small pieces until there wasn't much left. At that point he threw back his head and swallowed the remaining rodent whole. I took many photos from my window. At first the bird didn't seem to notice me, but then he definitely did. It didn't take long for it to become comfortable with me watching it. As of this writing, over half an hour after its arrival, it continues to sit and watch the ground below my feeders. Its definitely keeping the squirrels away! (not the birds though)
