Observation details
WR/MG. A dark buteo seen pretty well. PERCHED, SCOPE VIEWS: Mostly dark brown with some thin buff/tawny streaking on breast (thus not Harlan's, which would be blackish with white streaking); eyes pale (juv. trait), lores grayish; underside of tail pale light grayish/whitish with a few poorly defined darker bands; undertail coverts broadly barred (wide dark and tan bands). IN FLIGHT, HEADING AWAY, DORSAL VIEW: tail darkish brown or reddish-brown; outer primaries slightly paler, forming dull patch on outer wing. IN FLIGHT, SOARING (BINOCS AND SCOPE): for pattern of underparts, see photos; tail seemed whitish from below with fine narrow dark bands and slightly wider one at tip; above, brownish or reddish brown with (again) some fine dark banding. All of this fits a dark juvenile calurus (Western Red-tail) and tallies well with a couple of images (406, 424) in Wheeler, Raptors of Western North America.
