Observation details
This species was noted all along the water way of the wildlife area. This was the most individuals seen in one location by both Ed Harper, my birding companion, and me. We could not recall having to look hard for Western Grebe before. The majority of the Aechmophorus clarkii observed were well into their breeding plumage showing total white around the eyes, a very bright orangish-yellow bill and very pale sides in comparison to the darker gray sides the few A. occidentalis seen showed. Also, the A. clarkii's distinctive, single note call was readily heard. Several pair and sometimes as many as four individuals were observed doing their notable courtship display.
