Answering a question re. the people on Yorktown marking their coordinates as they were going down: 00:57 Ballard: I don't think anyone that ever goes down on a ship says -you know what? What we really need to do is to get our coordinates so that someone can find the ship -I don't think that's in their mind at all-it's saving their lives -so they are not writing down coordinates -wish they would -make life a lot simpler 1:20 alright -let's do it the old fashion way -the way we found Titanic and Bismarck was this way -on video lines looking for debris -searching out with your sonar -quarter miles ?? -(some sonar sounds in bg) ¬space your lines a mile apart -so, here we are, settle in -get the popcorn (bg -"it's going to be an all nighter") all dayer -2:07 -so he is getting up to speed now, he is point 7 2:20 2:22 louder ambi -with ballard talking and sonar in bg ¬ 3: 16 -it's delayed BB -there isn't that much to see out there ... you can't look at this one bc it is zoomed in .... when he zooms it looks really scary when he zooms .. zero speed, so he is still messing around .... Seems really comfortable. No sense in recovering. Stay down -we are committed now -it what? Took us 8 hours to get down? 5: 18 let's see -in the water at 8:00, 0800 -yeah .....6:05 we reached bottom -bottom at view at 2 -seven hours ... 6:46 ¬all right -we haven't seen it yet, but it will start in a minute ?? -we put in a long line ¬ ?? looking for targets 7:32 NC -are those little animals we are seeing BB -there are animals but you are seeing manganese nodules they just precipitate out of the water column in areas of low deposition. And we are out in the middle of nowhere so there is little sedimentation here. Less than a centimeter per thousand years. So these manganese nodules are able to form. Sort of like a nucleating center and things precipitate out of the water column. It commonly began in a shark's tooth or a whale bone-you pick it up and cut it open you find some little -like a pearl -something that got it all started .... really not commercially valuable .... more about manganese nodule mining ... 9:47 down behind the pilot's seat you will find my bedroom slippers and my teddy bear. ... see them down on the deck. ... 10:06 ?? -we have already done a caga-site (?) or cara-site (?) we did a 750 feet or 700 feet to the south box to the thousand around the site -one going right through the middle and then through the ..... 700 down and a thousand across the missile and then we bisected it through the acagi? ACAGI site. 10:3 6 BB -so we are on our way to the ACAGI site which is 33,000 feet a little over 5 miles away. We are making a round a knot, so we figure we will be up there in 5 hours ... so we will check out that target. Our intention is to remain here until we leave for midway. So either we will work the target up north and find it to be fruitful or we will begin and move over a mile and go down again ... 11:29 (talking about rocks in the area) 11 :59 you know at these depths, meteoritic dust is a majorable (?) component .... The CTFM sure has been quite -so does he have a pitch up or down? ..... have you tried to drive a stern ..... 13:09 ambi -with sonar in bg through 13:30.
