NPR/National Geographic Society RADIO EXPEDITIONS Whales LOG WHALES [Chuck Thompson and John Calambokidis] MS recordings 00:00 -2:23 Chuck's description as he walks along Pillar Point Harbor, Half Moon Bay, San Francisco. Just about to depart with John Calambokidis 36 miles out in 30' zodiac. Calm, foggy, cliffs, stone jetties, fog horn John -tall, bearded, young, hardy, laid back, low key, takes this stuff in stride FX: 2:30 -13:50 General ambi along wharf [for under script] -gulls, fog horn, wind, boat unloaded and being put in water, dock sounds, starting and revving motor -9:10; radio report re. weather; truck driving away 14:26 see Dall's porpoises 15:10 -17:06 FX -start up engine and move at sea 17:07 -18:52 FX -General ambi at sea with boat bobbing and wind howling lightly - CT -15 miles out -gray -5 foot swells 20:13 -31:00 JC: "Just sighted our first whale -other Dall's porpoises here too .... " FX -whale blows -"surfacing right next to each other - 10 feet side by side; typically they'll be in the water 3-7 minutes [off mic] 23:43 -"With that last dive, they raised their flukes up in the air and went down, that usually indicates they went down on a feeding dive; down 3-7 minutes feeding on prey under the water; not picking up anything on prey patch..... could be a different pair; .....27:30 John notes sightings .... . position, water depth, 2 humpback whales and four Dall's porpoises .... 31:40 -FX -Moving through water and slow down/stop -Water choppier *@34:00-37:00 Fast move through the seas -very choppy! 37:57 JC: *"This calm circle of water is called a whale's footprint. It's made up by water being pushed to the surface by the force of the fluke of the animal". JC answers phone ..... 41:00 -48:46 FX -Good moving along easily in the water -not too fast and no bumps or talking -slow down, stop + whales lightly blowing + boat engine quietly stops 48:45 -50:51 JC: //*"I take photographs -frames 1-6 -of the undersides of the flukes of both animals, so I identify two of two, They're both fairly dark colored flukes so one animal is all dark with one vertical line on the right side, looks like an individual we first identified about two years ago off here.// The other animal is a little smaller, was trailing the first animal, had a mostly dark fluke with a cream colored margin off top right edge. The animals were still fairly consistently traveling to the south and southeast. didn't pick up any prey with the depth-sounder, water depth still at 88 meters ....still quite a few shearwaters, around, one pelican, and common muures ....so those are the types of photographs ..... *//we have about 900 different individuals identified on the California coast here, and we'll match those two up to those 900 and unless they're a new animal that's a few years old, almost all the animals we have identified, so we have a very good chance of matching those up. On average we've seen each individual about 10 -15 times, so we usually have a pretty good history of these animals and where they've been// 50:51 [50:52-51:13] We keep track of things like females, how often they give birth to a calf, so these look like two juveniles 3-4 years old. +FX We may want to go on search for more whales, expect to see more...
