NPR/NG Radio Expeditions Bahamas/Key Largo DAT log #6 5/25-29/95 Lee Stocking Is. DAT #2, Beach interview -Ellen Prager Bahamas EP = Ellen Prager LN = Lynn Neary 0:00 (slate: DAT #2 Lee stocking Island) 0:37 (plane goes over...blank space) 1:00 ln: introduce yourself ep: id 1:20 ln: whre are we, what is this place? 1:30 ep: CMRC ...unique environment (some wind) no dense population to impact coral reefs...marine facilities for scientists to study, so that we can compare it to environments (around the world) which are impacted...how can we preserve them? LSI is place to do that. 3:00 ln: how is the reef here similar to reefs along florida coasts? ep: (distant bg plane) ...what you put in you get out... (answer stops for plane) ... 4:00 ln: (re-ask question) not far from florida, compare these two reefs. ep: millions of years ago very similar. man now here, produces wastes, which increases sewage load...where people use reef you see degradation... in some areas of Polynesia they dynamite reefs... also natural problems: storms, overgrowths....we ask people not to fish close to island tso as not to bias population. 6:30 ln: example of studies here? ep: 2 large programs: recruitment of species (conch, lobster), where did they go, settle, start to grow, predators. another project: health of the reefs. monitoring temperature (and other conditions over time.) this is a spot that scientists come back to on a regular basis to examine... 8:30 ln: who are these scientists? ep: non-profit group... scientists apply with proposal...come from all over (germany, australia) ... 9:15 ln: how many in a year? ep: 4000 dives on scuba every year...a thousand maybe, hundreds. 10:15 ln: ***how do you get people to care? most don't live on oceans ... only know the beach... ep: ideally, get them into the ocean. Realistically some can't afford to go to the ocean, so bring the ocean to those people in a form that's going to excite them. bring pictures and videos to show it to them. ie: deep sea vents... 12:10 ln: thanks ellen ep: you're welcome. (ambient tail at end.) 13:10 (alternate ending) ln: thanks ep ...now let's turn back to sylvia earle one more time. 14:10 (other ambience... efx).
