Observation details
Well seen. Flew from causeway to cattail island, immediately went out of sight in cattails. Half an hour later came out on the south side of the cattails into plain view. Swam around island to the east out of sight. In flight I saw the trailing legs, rounded wings, white leading edge to wings, pale tail, brown/sooty body coloration. When it landed I saw the red beak and frontal plate before it went into the cattails. Second time I observed the bird through a spotting scope and saw the white patch on the flanks (leading edge of wing), light tail, red beak and frontal plate w pale tip to beak. Confirmed body / wing color was not purple. Last (only) Windsor county record 1974 according to ebird data. Others seen in eastern Vermont this spring. Digiscope image showing red beak. Digiscope image showing flank patch.
