Observation details
The kites were observed foraging on a large, winged hymenopteran (ants or termites) that were swarming above the lodge at Hacienda Concepcion. Two photos here show the kites actively eating the abdomens, after which they dropped the remaining parts of the insects (head and thorax) to the ground. We noticed numerous individual insects crawling on the ground without abdomens. The swifts were also likely foraging on these insects, but they likely ate the entire insect whole.
