Observation details

Found this large, bulky female hummingbird feeding along the eastern ridge of Steens. We observed the bird for a long period of time with close views. Consistent with Broad-tailed, this bird showed only a narrow, vertical strip of rufous on each hip of tail feathers, while fanned out. Rufous color was limited to very base of upper tail feathers. (Rufous hummingbird, exhibit extensive rufous on tail feathers with less green and black seen). The tail was also noticeably broad. Showed very clean, finely marked throat. Lacked Rufous Hummingbird's typical orange-red central throat spot as well as larger throat spots.
