Observation details
Difficult to discern by images. These were much larger than Ruddy Duck, a similarly plumaged bird. Birds appeared as unusual and unfamiliar "sea ducks" in flight, and on first pass I had even joked that I was seeing Eiders in the North Atlantic before realizing that we actually were seeing an unusual sea duck here on East Balsam Lake. They were heavy, and juveniles appeared as over-sized Ruddy Ducks. Pictures included. We see scoters on Wisconsin's big lakes in October casually (a couple of sightings in recent years).
