Observation details
This happened to me on 25/05/2018 at 10:45 AM, when i unexpectedly looked into this wonderful, colorful small creature resting in the shade, inside the garden of our field station. This is Oriental Dwarf Kingfisher (Ceyx erithaca), also known as the Black-backed Kingfisher endemic to Indian sub-continent. This is a small, averaging 13 cm (5.1 in) in length, yellow underparts with glowing bluish-black upper-parts. This bird is a resident of lowland moist-forests in Western Ghats and partially migrant to eastern Himalayas during peak summer season. By the time south-west monsoons arrive in Western Ghats, this bird will fly-back from eastern Himalayas. I was very lucky to see this and get a record shot of this rare bird during it's pit stop in the central Deccan which is off semi-arid open landscape.
