Observation details
Found foraging on a fish meal pile then watched for the next couple of hours. Around the size of a Herring Gull with an all dark, slate coloured mantle and wings. Seemed more attenuated than Herring Gull, slimmer looking. The head through to the upper breast and sides of the neck streaked, heavier around the eye giving it almost a vague eye patch. The legs were deep pink, the bill yellow with a red gonys, long and fairly parallel. The eye was pale. The open wing showed the typical 'string of pearls', the outer primaries being darker than the overall upper wing/mantle colour. On the closed wing it showed well-spaced white primary tips,. There was a bold and obvious tertial crescent.
