Media notes
Lots of background noise but you can hear the wing Twitter of a woodcock taking flight as I walked toward it.
Observation details
Stumbled upon these in a small cypress dome. We were conducting a prescribed burn on the property today and a couple of us walked in the dome to light off the edges of the wet area in the middle. A coworker spotted the woodcocks first when two flushed up. Minutes later a third ran out ahead of him and he got a great little video of it. I walked through again in the area that they landed and I was able to see them running along the ground before they flew a short distance out of sight. I got a poor glimpse of one on video but it’s probably not worth adding here. Their bright orangish bellies were surprisingly visible. I’ve only seen woodcocks in good daylight once before. I forgot how beautiful they are. The twittering sound of their wings was cool too.
