Observation details
*rare* but annual in winter on CT coast. Continuing immature bird, easily identifiable by pale mantle, small size, dove-like head shape, and bright red bill & legs. Extremely close views at the shore of Eagle Pond just below Tod’s Driftway. The gull was methodically foraging along the edge of the water, rapidly patting its feet into the silt to dislodge small prey. Using this strategy the gull caught several small food items in the few minutes that I was watching.
