Media notes
A few field marks discernible here . . . a black/dark gray nape collar, black leading edge on wing, and a thin black terminal band on tail.
Observation details
Presumably this bird was one of the two kittiwakes reported earlier by David. V and Lauren H. The kittiwake was located straight out from the marina, about a half to one mile. It flew to the northwest very close to the west shore, obviously in CA. Due to the distance photos are blurry, but are supportive and show some key features of the bird. The bird appeared to be a juvenile with a grayish patch behind the eye and a dark collar on the nape of the neck. There were very distinctive wing patterns while flying, suggestive of a dark M pattern characteristic of Black-legged Kittiwakes. The white tail had a thin black terminal band. I believe I saw it drop to the surface of the lake and dive underwater briefly.
