“Whit” call notes
Observation details
Additional details and call audio to be submitted to FOS records committee ASAP. First found by Gallus Quigley earlier in the day. I relocated what I presume is the same individual later in the day. It was about 100ft west of where Gallus found it, on the opposite side of the entrance to the parking lot. When I arrived I started searching the area near the gate and listening for calls. After several minutes of nothing at all I played the WIFL 'whit' calls from my Sibley app. Immediately I got a 'whit' response from the west side of the bridge. I walked to that area and played the recording again. That's when the bird started calling and I grabbed the linked recording. Moments later I spotted a small grey empid with dirty-whitish wing bars and a light yellowish wash to the lower belly and vent in the same area where the calls had been coming from. I only had a brief look before it flew into dense cover and was not seen again. I can't say for certain that the empid I saw was the same one that I heard but I believe that it was. I heard no other empid species calling besides the 'whit's of a WIFL. I think the yellowish tones on the bird I saw could indicate a first year bird or otherwise very fresh plumage. Here is a video clip that captures two 'whit' call notes. The clearest note can be heard about halfway through the video: https://flic.kr/p/xK7buF
