Observation details
To watch a video of portions of the noisy flock leaving the pine trees ***Click here*** Probably a conservative count. Seen in the very tall pine trees next to the Rocky Canyon parking area, just across the road from the Sapillo Campground entrance. LOTS of jays!! The pine trees were full of them, calling. Had fun watching with binoculars and listening to their calls, but it was very difficult to get any good photos since they were very high up in the pine branches, so my commemorative shots are not the greatest. This species was acquired earlier in the day as a "Lifer" in a different location (scenic road 15 west of Lake Roberts), but as a disappointing three "heard-onlys", so this big, noisy flock more than made up for that. **Note - the sighting spot is technically neither in the Sapillo Campground itself, nor in Rocky Canyon itself, but after the flock flew from the road area, they crossed the small river valley to the far trees, so that would count more as Rocky Canyon, and the Rocky Canyon eBird Hotspot marker is pretty much right where we originally spotted them. They were quite beautiful as they foraged in the far trees and on the ground, looking like fluttering blue butterflies in the sunlight.
