grey tern with very short, square tail. overall, not delicate. black bill. dark edge to tip of primaries and dark, smudgy coverts over alula. top of back/bottom of nape with rusty feathers; darker brown coverts also scattered around base of wings (on dorsal side) "above" secondaries 8-10. Head feathers fade from white at cere to to medium grey on forehead between eyes; become solid medium grey around back of eyes, below bottom edge of eye, then "cap" curves inwards to the nape and down the nape to the top of the back. Overall, plumage is not "clean." distinguished from whiskered tern by curved "headphones" behind eyes and square, barely notched tail.
