Observation details
I heard these birds giving whistled, "chu-weet" calls overhead before they came in and landed along the southwestern shore of Pond W11-12. Once in view I was able to note that these were small shorebirds with large heads and compact bodies, but also long wings, and short, stubby bills. The upperparts were medium-brown but the underparts were white with a single, black breast-band that was of the same width across the breast and sides. The bird seen best had a small, white area on the forehead, but also a black mask and no supercilium. I cannot now recall if either bird had a white collar, yet I suspect my photos may show this. I further noted dark eyes, no obvious orbital-ring, a bill that was orangey basally with a dark tip, and, as I recall, yellowish legs. Semipalmated Plovers are scarce at the wildlife area and generally not expected here as migrants in late July. Both birds appeared to be adults in alternate plumage, with one a male and the other a female.
