Observation details
Tom spotted this bird from the overlook on the west side of the lagoon, but it was relatively close to our position. This bird was not all that large and it had a slim bill that tapered form a base that was not too deep to a pointed tip along a culmen that was essentially straight and with the lower mandible sloping weakly upward. The forehead was sloping and the crown had a flattened appearance on a head that was not as bulky as those of the other loons. The neck was relatively short and slimmer than those of some loons. The body was elongate but particularly slim and the tail was short and weakly rounded. Forehead, crown, nape, back of the neck were slate-gray. I thought the gray reached right about down to the upper edge of the eye, but the white extended just above the eyes in the supraloral region and up the to level of the eyes behind it. The demarcation between gray and whit eon the neck was not as sharply defined as on Pacific and seemingly a little farther back on the neck. The upperparts were a dark slate-gray with what appeared to be some fine whitish speckling that was inconspicuous. When this bird rolled over to preen, it revealed that the breast, belly, and undertail coverts were white, but I am less sure about the flanks. we never saw the wings spread. The bill was a relatively light horn-gray color, though possibly with the culmen darker. The eyes were dark. The legs and feet were light to medium gray along the lower edge, but I thought darker in the upper. Not sure about the webbing or lobes on the toes.
