Observation details
Rarely detected from land and to my knowledge not especially common in the Gulf overall. Also hard to separate from Short-tailed Shearwater, but long bill with pinched middle look good for Sooty. The dark flight feathers with contrasting paler primary coverts also seem good for Sooty. It seems this bird is part of a broader movement as at least two others have been reported in the region in recent days. Feet sticking out beyond the tail is sometimes quoted as a mark for Short-tailed, but cursory research suggests this may not be decisive.
