Observation details
I saw a bird that was flapping and holding its wings like a harrier, but up high (not low over the ground like the usual harrier) with an eagle and some turkey vultures. I had already seen 2 harriers here on this road and as always I looked in binocs to see if it was a male, female, or immature. Then I was astonished to see it was shaped like a buteo, not a harrier! Yikes. NO way could it be a.... But then it banked and I saw the light belly, the light wing lings, the all dark flight feathers and the dark chest. WOW it is... a Swainson's!! I ran to the car and grabbed the camera with the big lens and managed to shoot a few images of it. In the images you can see many of the other field marks of this species.
