Observation details
Male House Finch in the vacant lot; we flushed the bird from a ditch, then saw it sitting in a tree about 100 feet away for about 10 seconds before it flew up and over the houses above the lot; the bird was small and light brown with proportionately long tail, short thick dark beak, and reddish on the head and chest; not much for markings on the face so the dark eye stood out; called repeatedly - "chew" notes and upslurred "chuit" notes, sometimes run into a series - very distinctive. Jim Lewis found the bird again later in the evening - I returned and obtained some photographs:
