Observation details
Awesome. This is one of the cooler birds I have ever seen. Strikingly patterned black and white. Sooty black body with dark chocolate wash to crown and back. Pure white throat, breast and underparts with smudgy border against sooty black flanks. Observed a pair very close for ca. 15 minutes moving through the undergrowth. A third individual was seen briefly going away on the opposite slope. Foraged mostly on the ground, moving constantly and often holding wings open and tail up. The scientific name is well deserved (if I am understanding it correctly) the overall shape and behavior reminded me of a Dipper. Photos.
