Observation details
Small, long-billed rails with gray faces, red eyes, and orange bills. Overall rusty coloration, black lower flanks with white vertical bars. Seen simultaneously, emerging from reeds in freshwater/brackish marsh (40.695755, -73.272769) in response to audio playback, making "grunt" vocalizations before appearing. Both rails quickly proceeded to resume foraging in the open for ~1 minute before slipping back into cover.
