Observation details
Multiple birds encountered during trawl. Readily separated from Wilson's Storm-Petrel by distinctive flight and larger size. Prominent brown carpal bar usually obvious and in several cases the birds were close enough to see the notched tail. Exact coordinates of each sighting available, max of 3 simultaneously. Unfortunately none lingered for really good photos plus we were preoccupied with the fishing activities. We've found this species to be relatively common in the past few summers over deep water in the eastern portion of NYS pelagic waters and therefore not surprised to encounter some across the line. This trend seems to continue into MA waters as indicated by recent organized pelagics.
