Observation details
I first came across this bird on Saturday (Oct 20) while making a final "sweep" around the parameter with my car. I soon found out it was the 1st record of "Sage" sparrow at Montecito, so I let Roger Woodruff know, and he soon came over and photographed the bird after I left. The photos of this bird looked "interesting" so a number of birders went to look for this bird the following day (Sunday). Fortunately the bird was in the same spot and was cooperative, allowing us to take plenty of photos. Upon review, the Montecito bird shows darker, more distinct back streaking when compared to museum specimens of canescans (the inland/desert subspecies of Bell's). The Montecito bird also has a thin malar stripe which does not contrast with the rest of the head, characteristic of Sagebrush. Additionally, feedback from three experienced individuals favors identification as Sagebrush.
