Observation details
Continuing, and seen building a nest. First seen/photographed this season by Ninad Thakoor on 9/15. On 9/29, Ninad saw this bird with nesting material--although he didn't find the nest until 10/2. Today (10/3) he showed me the location, and we were able to see the bird several times nest-building. Ninad also photographed the bird in and around its nest. This is possibly the 4th Winter for this Verdin either in or around UCR Botanic Gardens. The Tobins found a Verdin on the 2010 UCR CBC, and I (and others) have seen a Verdin the subsequent three winters. To the best of my knowledge, nobody has seen this bird in the area except from September - January. We saw the Verdin with binoculars from a medium distance for about 3 minutes at its nest, and several other times from far distances (the Verdin had a pretty far range). The face and front part of the head was yellow. The shoulder was red. The bird was about bush-tit size. The bird vocalized loudly and often incessantly when it was not at its nest with relatively sharp chip notes.
