Observation details
"approx 10 am. Gull intermediate in size between Mew and Bonaparte's Gull. Wing tips black with white tips, black area sparated from the gray mantle area by a wide white area (see sketch). The bird had a pronounced "half-hood" with the aras around the eyes having a clear cut and distinctive white half circles. Bill was a very dark reddish with an orange tip to it. The legs, unfortunately, were not visitble. " I have seen Franklin's Gulls in winter plumage efores, as they usually moult before departing the Prairies in the fall. First winter record for Vancouver Island.
