Observation details
A first-year male Black Scoter seen at fairly close range (about 100 feet). A large, uniformly dark duck with a large dark bill covered with a large, bright yellow shield at the base of the upper mandible. The scoter frequently dove. Photographed. I reported this bird on the WV-BIRD listserve as an adult male. A closer look at the photo seems to suggest a first year male. The body doesn't seem as glossy black as an adult male should be. The sooty color matches well with the bird labeled "1st-yr. male" in the Crossley Guide.
