Observation details
This bird was found earlier in the day by Joe Devine who was birding area 4 during the Caswell-Westley CBC. This is the first record of White-winged Dove for Stanislaus County. It was about the size of a Mourning Dove, but was shorter tailed and appeared slightly plumper to me. The white wing patches appeared along the leading edge of the folded wing. The bill seemed long for a dove, and it had a small black crescent at the bottom of the auricular. In flight the bird showed bold white wing crescents about half way out, separating light brown inner panels from dark outer wings. In flight it also showed a rounded tail with white tips to the tail feathers.
