Observation details
Alabama Coastal Birding Site 15E. A big surprise! Assumed to be another Tree Swallow at first until I realized that it did not seem as bright white in the throat area. Further study revealed a pale collar and a buffy rump so I wondered about Cliff Swallow. We all settled in to try and study the throat and we were eventually rewarded with good views. This bird flew around a pond at the site, on the southern side of the old fort. We watched it for about 10 minutes before it flew directly away from us toward the ocean, eventually losing sight of it. Small agile swallow-like flight with glides and much flapping. Dark on back and wings with contrasting buffy rump with a slight rufous tone. Head appeared capped due to dark crown and pale buff collar connecting to pale buff face and throat. Belly was whitish. I have seen this species in Florida and Texas and a few times on Lake Ontario in western NY during the late fall, when they may appear after strong southwesterly winds. Poor photos obtained.
