Associated and focal recordings of pair, specimens GFS1147 / LSU B-96587 (male) and CFC121 / LSU B-96588 (female). Both birds very responsive to playback and determined to be in reproductive condition (female had convoluted oviduct, male L-testis 7x2 mm) when dissected. In duet, the female always called first and the male responded. In these duets, the female call is slightly lower and consists of a highly modulated introductory note followed by a quick hiccup. This call is usually followed by the male's call, which is a one or two quick modulated notes followed by a more drawn-out yet still rapid ascending descending whistle. Good examples of female/male couplets are highlighted below. Clear female-male couplets 0m1.7s - 0m2.38s, 0m14.35s-0m15.402s. It is important to note that I never recorded the female in isolation giving these introductory duet calls. After the male was collected, the remaining female switched to a lower-pitched version of the call the male was recorded giving in isolation right before being collected. However, these introductory duet calls are lower-pitched than the focal recordings of the male, pointing again to the female, which was the bigger of the two birds by body mass (male 32.9g, female 34.4g). Cut 1 - Pair in duet. Cut 2 - Pair in duet. Female is the off-target introductory note at 1m18.7s followed immediately after by on-target male. Cut 3 - Pair in duet. Cut 4 - Focal recordings of the male 'pipping' in isolation. Cut 5 - Focal recordings of the male call in isolation. This call is identical to the calls given in response to a different call (likely the female) Cut 6 - Announcement. Cut 7-8 - Focal recordings of female in isolation. After the male was collected, the female changed her call to one resembling the male's, but lower pitched. She also gave the pipping calls. Cut 9 - Announcement. *****These recordings are part of ongoing research on tyrannid vocal repertoires.
