Singing wildly along the river, far shore, fairly far downstream.
Observation details
What an incredible delight to see and HEAR this most magnificent of the birds of the Western Palearctic. I get that hoopoes and bee-eaters are more popular, and I sure didn't mind seeing them, but THIS is the bird I had hoped against hope I would find. And I did. Five of them! Gloriously strewn out along the path along the river, over the course of about two miles. I know some birders compare them to nightingales--and compare them favorably. Which is fine. But, to me, they're like Gray Catbirds, marvelous birds to be sure; only better. The song of the blackcap! Oh! Oh! There was a lot of construction sound, and I couldn't get it out of the recordings at all, but that's sort of the point--that these most exalted of tunesmiths just sing their merry old songs over the banging of hammers and whirring of drills and such.
