Media notes
Comparison suggests kittiwake's slightly smaller size and slightly darker gray mantle color (center of back).
Observation details
Found by Matt Rowe at same time as by David Becher and WGNSS group, west end of Ellis Bay. Besides field marks on the water (see photos), had one brief flight study, showing heavy black bar across middle of inner wing and another along leading edge of primaries, creating the bold black M-pattern. A rare bird in the midwest; majority of Missouri records are along the Mississippi, late fall through early spring, with some additional records here and there across the state (see Robbins). Total records quite a bit more than 15; thus listed as "rare," not "casual," and state documentation not necessary. Seen about 9:30 AM but gone an hour later; I'm told that it reappeared briefly mid-PM below the dam, in Illinois.
